Why Did Tens of Thousands of Youth Head to Yan’an

During the War of Resistance Against Japan, the youth heading to Yan’an boasted a unique scenery line.

Yan’an, like a huge magnet, attracted many young people who was pursuing progress. According to statistics, more than 40,000 intellectuals arrived in Yan’an after the Anti-Japanese War, most of whom were from well-off families and had a good educational background. At that time, they could expect a bright “personal future.” There were also young overseas Chinese who were so patriotic that they travelled far and wide.

The road to Yan’an was rife with various difficulties and even life-threatening dangers. Liang Shuming described the road: “The car is a large military truck. The road is a military highway, but from Xi’an to the north, it goes higher and higher without bridges and culverts. Thus, the traffic to Yan’an is dangerous and troublesome.”

Why did so many people rush to Yan’an without hesitation? Photographer Wu Yinxian’s answer was that Yan’an was the “ideal place”: “I saw Chairman Mao Zedong, Commander-in-Chief Zhu De and others in coarse-cloth uniforms appearing on the streets of Yan’an and chatting with soldiers and fellow villagers. They were laughing and talking... I was deeply moved.” Ding Ling said, “Yan’an is a paradise.” “We have only been here for half a year. Although it is not a great construction, the streets are clean and planted with locus trees and mulberry; there are no beggars and prostitutes, no opium-taken places and casinos. Everything is harmonious with the policy of land to the tillers .”

What was Mao Zedong’s answer? In 1940, Mao Zedong gave his answer in the speech “Unite All Anti-Japanese Forces and Oppose the Anti-Communist Diehards.” He said that there were “ten noes” in Yan’an: no corrupt officials, no local tyrants and evil gentry, no gambling, no prostitutes, no wives, no beggars, no gangsters, no malaise, no troublemakers, no one cashing in on national calamity.
